Blakeney Greasy Pole
Blakeney’s beloved Greasy Pole Challenge is set to return on Wednesday 30th July 2025 as part of the Blakeney Sailing Regatta weekend. This cherished tradition dates back to 1873, when the victor was awarded a hog. Today, it continues to delight both participants and spectators with it’s blend of history and humor.
The highlight, the Greasy Pole Challenge, involves participants attempting to traverse a 30-foot-long, grease-coated telegraph pole suspended over the water. The goal is to reach the end without falling in (a feat accomplished by roughly 20% of the 50 or so entrants aged 12 and above). This event is traditionally held in the evening to coincide with high tides of at least 8.4 to 8.6 meters, ensuring safety and adding to the spectacle.
The day’s festivities commence at 10am and include a whole host of family friendly fun including:
-
Tug of War as the tide rises
-
Swimming Races
-
The Greasy Pole Challenge
-
Gilly Catching Competition
-
Sandcastle Competition as the tide recedes
It is sure to be a wonderfully unique event, come and see what all the fuss is about!
